FeaturedInterview With Stunt Performer:
Tell about yourself and your background! *
Greetings, I'm Brett and I grew up in Reno NV! I've been involved with stunts and acting for almost 6 years now. I started doing martial arts (Tae Kwon Do) right around my 5th birthday, and ended up reaching my 2nd degree black belt at the age of 14. Over the years my martial arts experience helped me expand my skills into tricking, tumbling, weapons, and stage fighting. My transition into stunts didn't happen until 2015, performing as the Amazing Spider-man in the traveling live production "Marvel Universe Live." I learned a lot about wire flights, high falls, and working with pyrotechnics. I traveled the world for over four years performing as the friendly neighborhood web-head, and then relocated out Los Angeles to pursue film! Now here I am on my journey, and I'm excited for the experiences to come.
What inspired you to become a stunt performer?
I'd say my two biggest inspirations for pursuing stunts and acting were Jim Carrey and Jackie Chan. I idolized Jim growing up, his comedy and characters he's brought us over the years have been pure gold and I always catch myself quoting his movies in some way. Later on I discovered who Jackie Chan was, and that was the moment I knew exactly what I wanted to do in life. performing as different characters was great, but Jackie was able to make people laugh AND deliver top notch quality action. I'd say my dream career is the perfect blend between those two titans of comedy and action.
What is your greatest skill as a stunt performer, is there a stunt behind it?
I think my greatest skill would be adapting to new movement and choreography well. I think growing up remembering all my martial arts curriculums, also having a photographic memory, I can remember specific details in how a person stands, moves, etc.
What is the best part about being a stunt performer?
Bringing the action to life on the big screen. There are SO many things about this industry that I love, the people you meet, places you see, and skills you acquire. Honestly I think my favorite part about this is that my younger self would be proud of me, because I never gave up on my dream.
What advice would you give other stunt performers?
Work your craft! Consistency is the key to being successful in life. If you can even just dedicate a little bit of time each day towards what you really want in life, I have no doubt you'll achieve your goals.
