Stunt Performer Spotlight: Ida Bakk

Featured Interview With Stunt Performer: Ida Bakk

Tell about yourself and your background! *

I grew up in a small town in the middle of Norway, as the oldest of three children. As a kid, I loved to be active and try out new sports;  everything from gymnastics to riding to football. At the age of 12, I started doing Kickboxing and have done that for 7 years now. When I later moved to Oslo to attend high school, I started doing Wushu. When I graduated from high school, there was no question on what I wanted to do after. My dream and goal has always been to become a stunt performer. Now at the age of 19, I go to International Stunt Academy here in Norway. There is no doubt in my mind that this is something I want to work with full time.

What inspired you to become a stunt performer?

I was around 10 years old, when I figured out that stunt was something I really wanted to do. My family and I used to watch American Ninja Warrior together, and one time Jessie Graff was running. Right away, I thought it was so cool that it was possible to be that strong. When my father told me that she was a stunt performer and showed me some videos of her, I knew right away that this was the dream, the big goal in my life. Since then I`ve always had that dream in the back of my head, and from then on, everything I did was to get there somehow. I knew that Martial Arts was a good background to have, so I started doing kickboxing and later Wushu. With Wushu, I fell in love instantly. This was the perfect background to have, because we were simulating fights and were doing weapons, which I have always wanted to do.

What is your greatest skill as a stunt performer, is there a stunt behind it?

From a young age, I`ve always been disciplined and focused on what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I will say that this is my greatest skill. And I think this is one of the most important skills to have as a stunt performer. Because you have to be able to do what requires of you, especially on the days that you don’t want to.

What is the best part about being a stunt performer?

I’m very new to the game, but I look forward to the different places to work on, the different people to work with and that the work day is never the same. The absolute best part is that I get to use my body.

Tell your all-time favorite stunt story!

That must be my first time doing a stunt on a project! This was a project the stunt school had planned, and we were going to have an episode each and plan our own episodes ourselves, storyline and stunts. I absolutely love heights so it was obvious to me that I was going to do something with a high fall in it. Right when I jumped, my mind just went “What the f**k are you doing?”. But when I landed on the mattresses, I remember the adrenaline rush through my whole body and I was just shouting of happiness. That I can tell you, is one of the best feelings I`ve ever experienced.

What advice would you give other stunt performers?

If you are on set, always ask questions if it involves your own or others security. Better with one too many, than risk yourself or others being injured unnecessarily.
